Am I still a socialist Dad?

Am I still a socialist Dad?

My 19 year old son voted for the first time in the recent Federal Election. Apart from a few hearty debates around the dinner table when I was the same age, politics has not been discussed at length in my family, nor between my wife and I..

  • The fallen mindset and its bleak interpretations

I remember hearing interviews of Olympians before they would compete. Are you nervous? The interviewer asked. “No, I’m excited” they replied. I remember hearing the same response from people who were about to do public speaking.

  • Disability and poverty

People with disabilities have higher living costs because we have a long list of necessities. On top of general expenses like food, bills and transport disabled people have extra expenses because of our disabilities. New wheelchairs and other equipment occasionally need to be purchased and are expensive. Other disability-related expenses are ongoing like support workers, prescriptive medications and other various things that are essential to someone's wellness.

  • Technique, Technology and a little bit of Disney

We all learn in different ways and sometimes I gain understanding by relating concepts to the pop culture I have consumed.  It makes for awkward moments when I explain my understanding to those who know neither the concepts I am studying or the shows I have watched. The following is how the Disney show Phineas and Ferb gives a modern explanation of the ancient Greek attitude toward technology.

  • The Bible’s physical centre verse

Recently I was sent (again) a mathematical analysis of the verses in the English Bible. This analysis has been around for as long as he can remember but it nonetheless is an interesting story and whether there is anything "theologically" more to it that this, I cannot say.

  • The Tim Wilson story

I was born in Sydney then our family moved a few months later to Mudgee, 3.5hrs north west of Sydney. Mudgee is a wine and honey town of about 10,000 people and I grew up just outside of town.

  • He was there

  • Open hearts, open goals

You don’t have to travel to distant shores to experience culture shock, you can find it right here in Oz. I found this out one Grand Final weekend...wait, I should clarify, one AFL Grand Final weekend. Here in Victoria, it’s a BIG deal. Everyone, footy fan or not, is talking about it, it’s all over the news—to the point of making you wish the game had never been invented—and the weekend itself is now literally a public holiday.

  • When Christ finds you tempted

Too often, we find ourselves swimming in a sea of temptation. From our left to our right, there is something or somebody trying to grab out attention. So much of what the world parades as good is appetising to the eye, but destructive for the soul.

  • Separating Generations in the Church - Unwise

Having church services which distinctly cater for the needs of particular age groups is quite common in Australia. However, I suspect that this is actually doing more harm than good. Many churches have a system of having several services and distinguishing each with a particular demographic.

  • What! Monday again!

Picture this: It’s an evening service and you’re stepping inside your home church lobby. A girl, possibly in her early twenties, catches your eye. You stop and stare. What is it about her?

  • The wonders of a small congregation

I have only ever attended one church throughout my entire life. Church on the Bay or ‘COB’ as it is colloquially known is a simple, small, local church. Situated about two minutes from my house, I have spent the last twenty two years making the short journey to attend the weekly morning services.
