The Sydney Morning Herald of 5 September 1848 records that "on 4 September 1848 about 300 people gathered for a festive luncheon given by the Trustees in a booth erected in Mr Mort's grounds" to celebrate the Laying of the Foundation Stone for St Mark's Church at Darling Point by the Lord Bishop of Sydney, Bishop Broughton, who said: "The glorious Majesty of the Lord our God be upon us; prosper Thou the work of our hands upon us; O prosper Thou our handywork.".
