War Memorial
The road is steeped in a history of blood, sweat and tears. The Great Ocean Road is a 243-kilometre section of road in south-eastern Victoria between Torquay and Warrnambool. The road is actually the world's largest war memorial; dedicated to casualties of World War I. It was built by approximately 3,000 returned soldiers between 1919 and 1932. Construction was done by hand; using explosives, pick and shovel, wheel barrows, and some small machinery.
What a view
The other amazing thing about the road is its view. Forest to the north and ocean views to the south, an amazing location - perfect for a marathon. The Great Ocean Road marathon has been rated as one the top 100 races in the world by "Great Races, Incredible Places." It is described as a road, "mostly covered by trees and vegetation reminiscent of sketches drawn in books for children's fairy tales."
What a Race
From Lorne to Apollo Bay, this 45km course will be a challenge to runners. And it is not just the distance. The icy southerly winds and changeable weather will be part of battle. The course follows the natural contours of the coast line. This means constant rises and falls for the marathoners to fight against. These are the ingredients for a classic marathon course and one that has built a reputation as one of the world's best.
