Before the sun totally begins to set on 2010, I thought we might take a quick look back on a year that had all the twists and turns of a poorly built roller-coaster, and the way gambling is slowly eroding the purity of sport.
Due to the fact I don't have time to write a novel, I will skim the surface on what truly has been a tumultuous year for sport in Australia and beyond.
The Pakistani Cricket team did the world a favour and showed us just how much gambling has eroded sport, into a game of lies and deceit. It's humorous to me as a sports fan that can see the lighter side of life, every time Pakistan walks out for a test match in those "pure whites" getting ready for the days play.
Still on Cricket, you know you're never going to beat gambling in the game when the head of the Indian Premier League, Lalit Moodi was suspended, after it was revealed he has silent part ownership of three of the teams playing in his own competition.
Having grown up in the hot Australian summers I have been accustomed to escaping the heat by sitting inside and watching my hero's belt other teams bowling attacks all over the park.
Channel Nines coverage of cricket over the years has become an integral part of Australia's fabric. However in recent years the power of betting has slowly been creeping into the coverage to the detriment of the game.
I fear for the young kids watching, who will grow up watching the revolving odds during the day's play of a test match. I hope and pray that gambling never becomes an integral part of who we are.
On a local note 2010 will be remembered in boxing circles as the year we through away a rich past filled with great moments in Australian history. To the year that Paul Briggs stepped into the ring against Danny Green and removed all that was once so good about Australian Boxing.
On a brighter note, I was momentarily excited about Garth Wood knocking out Anthony Mundine, in the fifth…..until I heard that there was a number of boxing enthusiasts from inside the fraternity, who suddenly became a whole lot richer when Mundine puffed his way to the canvas floor. I'm not saying it was a setup, or even insinuating that there was foul play. I'm just saying it sucks that what could have been such a pure moment of underdog glory, is now overshadowed by a "has been" who managed to get a pay day.
I guess the biggest question on all of Australia's sports fans lips in 2010 is, how on earth did Qatar beat us to hosting the Soccer World Cup? It was interesting to see there promotional video that was played to the world. The number one highlight was they had copious amounts on natural light...well that tends to happen to when you live in the desert.
It's going to be very interesting over the next ten years to learn the real reasons why Qatar won the rights to hosting the world cup. I know that thoughts of Oil and Gold sound very "conspiracy theoristic" but these days nothing can surprise me when it comes to sport on a global level.
