The victory sets Queensland on the path to a demoralising 6th straight series win over New South Wales and immediately Ricky Stuart's position as coach is in doubt.
Stuart personally selected the team leaving out a number of certainties including current Australian players in favour of 5 debutants. Stuart then announced the team wouldn't change throughout the series regardless of the outcome.
It's hard to see how New South Wales can win without significant player changes.
Queensland scored via Jonathon Thurston early in the match and dominated the first 30 minutes, however New South Wales remained in contention after withholding a barrage of attacks from Queensland.
Queensland then scored again early in the second half to lead 10-0. Thurston missed the conversion and missed a penalty shot at goal shortly after.
Just when it looked all over for New South Wales, two quick tries to Mitchell Pearce and Michael Jennings handed them a 2 point lead.
Hopes of a New South Wales victory were dashed when Slater then went in for the match-winning try with 10 minutes to go.
Queensland won the game 16-10.
The weak link in the New South Wales team proved to be the backs. Gasnier, Pearce and Soward all underperformed and failed to capitalised on the strong performance of the forward pack. Morris had a shocker and Dugan wasn't much better.
New South Wales' failure to fire shouldn't take away from Queensland's victory. They were relentless and didn't let up. Every player contributed to the victory.
