Italy and France embarrassingly went out at the group stages while England were dumped out in the second round by a fantastic and diligent German display. Germany went 2 – 0 up early in the game and England responded with an Upson header. However minutes later Lampards shot came down off the underside of the cross bar and clearly crossed the line only to see the referee wave their appeals away. At that point it would have levelled the score for the teams however that was the end of England's come back as Germany capped off a fantastic night with 2 late goals to win 4 -1. England's media were critical straight after the game however credit to the Germans who played a fantastic, youthful display.
In group C Argentina won all 3 matches and continued their impressive form with a 3 – 1 second round win at the hands of Mexico. Tevez was on the score sheet twice with a fantastic brace while Messi (world player of the year) still couldn't find the net. Argentina now face Germany in the quarter finals to set up a mouth watering clash.
Ghana are through to their first ever quarter final as they are the only African team left in the competition. They got through a difficult group and dispatched of the USA in the second round with a fantastic 2 – 1 win. They now have a shot at the last 4 with a tricky game against Uruguay who beat South Korea earlier that day.
Brazil were to good for Chile with a convincing 3 – 0 win. Kaka was again instrumental in getting Brazil forward. Brazil now face Holland in a very difficult quarter final. The Dutch played extremely well in dispatching of Slovakia. Robben was superb as he scored the first. Holland went on to win 2 – 1 to book themselves into the quarter final.
