Relegation battles were everywhere this weekend as plenty of teams near the wrong end of the table had chances to get maximum points. In a 6 pointer at Wolverhampton, Wolves faced Blackpool in a do or dye fixture for the foxes and they didn't disappoint. Wolves showed desperation to come out 4-0 winners and send a message out to the League that they aren't going down without a fight. West Ham also saw an opportunity at home to Liverpool in which they delivered. Scott Parker was the main man at Upton Park with a superb display to help the Hammers to a 3-1 win over the ever improving Reds. West Ham moved off the bottom of the League with the victory and level on points with 16th.
Manchester City struggled to capitalise on their recent form struggling to a 1-1 draw with Fulham. In Mark Hughes first appearance back at Eastland's after his controversial departure, Hughes helped motivate his team to take away a much needed point. City will think this was 2 points dropped as they dominated proceedings for most of the match.
Aston Villa climbed 5 points clear of the drop zone with an impressive 4-1 win at home to Blackburn. Ashley Young was the star with a fantastic display to easy Villa's relegation fears. Newcastle and Bolton shared the points in a tense match at St James Park which ended 1-1 whilst Everton were too strong at home for Sunderland with Beckford scoring a double as Everton won 2-0.
Birmingham City have won he Carling Cup as they overcame Arsenal 2-1 with a late strike from Martins. Birmingham have won the first major trophy of 2011.
