Brazil were the first big South American name to be dumped out of the Quarter finals with a surprising 2-1 loss to the Netherlands. Brazil went ahead early with a delightful goal finished by Robiniho. Brazil were in control for most of the match until an amazing turn of events midway through the second half. First the Brazilian keeper made a terrible misjudgement from a cross that lead to the equaliser. Then Robbens corner was dispatched by man of the moment Sneijder. Brazil couldn't believe what was happening and they tried to level but to no avail. Brazil sacked their manager soon after the game and the biggest team are out of the Cup.
After that shock Uruguay made sure 1 South American team would stay in the cup with a dramatic penalty shoot out win over Ghana. Ghana (Africa's last team in the cup) were hoping to be the first ever African team to make the final 4 thought they were through with a last minute penalty as Uruguay sacrificed a player with a handball on the line which resulted in a red card. Ghana only needed to convert the penalty to win however the shot went over the crossbar. That resulted in extra time, only to see Uruguay some how come out on top and progress to the semi finals for the first time since 1970.
Germany through out power house Argentina with a thumping 4-0 victory. Argentina were not in good form however a fantastic Germany must be given credit for another 4 goal barrage. This is the 3rd game Germany has scored 4 goals and they look very impressive for such a young team. Argentina were shocked to be out so early and very disappointed as they really believed this was their year.
Spain took the last spot in the semi finals with a 1-0 win over Paraguay to keep another South American team out of the top 4. Spain again were not convincing however after their first game where they lost to Switzerland, Spain have quietly gone about their business and are now a major threat to lifting the greatest prize on earth.
So Netherlands play Uruguay and Germany takes on Spain to decide who will play off for the biggest trophy in 4 years.
