Magnificat (Liturgy)

Magnificat (Liturgy)

I live in a neighbourhood, and this neighbourhood is arguably (not much argument though) the coolest little neighbourhood in Auckland—most likely the coolest in New Zealand and, if so, most definitely the world!.

  • Christian, are your colours clear?

In our current culture, the idea of a solely subjective existence has become mainstream. We think we create our own meaning of life, our own road to happiness and we make a self-glorifying view of reality.

  • Stay-at-home parenting: the struggle of a 247 unpaid job

A recent article online by a stay-at-home mum advocated mums, or even dads, with young children should be able to stay at home with their children if they wanted to, without being burdened especially financially.

  • Connection and disconnection

Recently at church, I opened my eyes, irritated by the noise, and I saw her. Praying. I couldn\'t hear the words she muttered, only the sound, low and anguished as she ignored everyone, even the small child yelling and kicking her seat. I saw her lean forward, pleading with God.

  • Show us your shadow

I had an argument with a taxi driver while on holiday in Bali recently. He dropped my wife and me to our hotel and, being so friendly, even helped us with our bags. I handed over the amount I owed him, flicking through the cash.

  • Sexual travesty

In 2016 the rates of single-parent households among certain demographics rate about 70 percent—mum is around and dad isn\'t. It is well known that, as a general rule, kids without dads are more likely to be involved in crime and or incarcerated.

  • An exchange

Allegory is a powerful way of using story to illustrate ideas about true things. This is a conversation in stilted exchanges—the way we used to communicate in letters, telegraphs, postcards and emails, between one who is lost and searching for the other and one who is calling the other home.

  • Opinions, opinions everywhere... but not a drop to drink

I have a bone to pick with the world, and it\'s this: I don\'t want to hear one more of your opinions. Anyone\'s opinions—not a single one; I\'m done. I don\'t care what you think about the environment, politics, culture, economics, education, or the state of world affairs.

  • Learning the right lesson

Over the past few weeks we have been subjected to the unedifying spectacle of the coronial inquest into the tragic death of Phil Hughes, the young cricketer who was struck by a bouncer during a match, and later died from the injuries sustained from the blow.

  • Disciplining with grace and consequences

As a relatively new parent, I am constantly faced with parental decisions when it comes to raising our daughter. However being a Christian parent sometimes seems harder, as not only do we have to know the basic rules of parenting, we also feel it needs to be done based on our Christian parenting beliefs.

  • The Devil will offer you all the riches in the world but in the end rob you of every last penny

Finally, the devil took Jesus up on a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the earth and their glory. The devil said to him, \"All of this shall be yours, if you only bow down and worship me....\"

  • I see beauty

\'Hey bae... oh I mean barley.\' My voice bounces off the steel wall bunkers as I enthusiastically prepare myself for a day in paradise. Its 6:30 am and I\'m staring at a stack of grain. Feed Barley, in case you are remotely interested.
