The Hockey World Cup semi-final results saw Germany put paid to England 4-1 to proceed to the Final, which turned around last year's European Championships where England defeated Germany 5-2. Germany are the current World Cup (2006) and Olympic Champions (2008). Germany has reached the semi-finals of the World Cup on every occasion since 1973.
In the other semi-final Australia defeated the Netherlands 2-1 which sees a repeat of last November's Champions Trophy final, on that occasion Australia winning over Germany 5-3 after being 1-3 down at half time. But that result was reversed at the previous World Cup 2-1. Australia won Gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics and Bronze in Beijing in 2008.
For this 2010 World Cup in India, the Netherlands and England will play for the Bronze medal, New Zealand South Africa will compete for 9th and 10th place, Argentina and India will play out 7th and 8th place, while Korea and Spain will contest the 5th and sixth place. Canada has already defeated Pakistan for the 11th and 12th places, Pakistan's worst ever World Cup result (this writer has a feature article coming Pakistan's hockey demise).
The 2010 Hockey World Cup Final between Germany and Australia is played in the wee small hours of Sunday morning Australia time.
Meanwhile Australia's national scene sees the NBL 'Final' of three games between the Illawarra Hawks and the Perth Wildcats (they are currently one win each). The NRL (National Rugby League) 2010 competition gets under way this weekend.
